Your question: consistency improves the more you practice. The secret is to step away from your emotions – they stick you to situations so you get embroiled. Lower your eyelids when you feel the flames growing and step back into the cool place. This may be difficult when you start, but keeping the practice up will become your natural mode to witness the madness around you. Then, your inner universe will be the best haven!
